User Types on Family Tools

Contents

Note: This page explains the differences between a Linked user and a Standard user, which boils down to whether or not the user is connected to an email address. If you’re looking for how to change a user’s permissions, see Permissions.

Standard

A Standard user has its own email address and password connected to it, and the profile can only be accessed through those credentials. It’s ideal for parents and for older children who have their own device, or at least a personal email address. What they can add, edit, and delete depends on the permissions given to them. However, they can always delete their own profile.

Linked

A Linked user does not have its own username and password. Linked profiles are directly connected to the family account, and can only be accessed by Standard users with permission. A Linked profile is best for small children who don’t have an email address or who are too young to keep track of their own username and password.

Like Standard users, Linked users can be given a wide variety of permissions, but certain permissions require an email address, including:

  • Enabling notifications
  • Changing family account and family member information
  • Accessing other Linked profiles
  • Managing the Premium subscription

If you want a Linked user to be able to do any of these, upgrade them to a Standard user.

Since parents can easily access a Linked child’s profile from their own device, a parent can easily oversee and teach a child how to use the app. Family members can also easily share a tablet, phone, or PC with many Linked users. Linked users can also be great for a parent who wants to manage the whole family from their one device.

When a user is ready, a Linked user can easily be upgraded to a Standard user. (See the link above)
